STEM job shadow program activity

Is it possible that our world can only have one Steve Jobs, Grace Hooper or George Washington Carver? What would happen if our historical pioneers never had the chance to be creative and share their gifts? Do you think there are others out there today who can change the world through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – collectively known as STEM?

November 8 is National STEM Day, a day focused on promoting education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. At FTI, we appreciate our STEM-focused team members who contribute daily to advancing our industry and bringing solutions to our customers. We often reference STEM as STEEM, adding Energy to the acronym to reflect our focus on the future of energy technologies.

Supporting the Future of STEM

As adults, we can curate an atmosphere where young minds can be curious, explore and potentially thrive within STEM education. If this is done purposefully, it can overcome the distractions of social media, smart phones and online activities.

Similarly, as organizations, we need to cultivate interest in STEM careers at an early stage. To facilitate this within FTI, we’ve developed a STEM-focused job shadow program. Here, high school students can attend a full-day learning session to explore a variety of STEM-related career opportunities. Team members from across FTI share educational experiences in the areas of engineering, business technology, energy/renewable energy and more, with hands-on opportunities for students to apply what they’re learning. Our program inspires, educates and demystifies STEM topics, creating long-term benefits for our youth, our organization and the world we live in.

STEM at Work and in our Communities

As an industry leader in energy, electrical engineering, and construction and manufacturing, a majority of FTI’s 3,500+ team members work in STEM roles.  These professionals range from engineers, technicians, electricians and IT team members within offices and jobsites across the country. As they apply their STEM knowledge in their daily activities, they also know the importance of inspiring tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, electricians and mathematicians.

FTI is also passionate about supporting STEM in our communities. One of our giving priorities is supporting organizations which advocate for education and skills of our youth. We are proud to play a part in the ambitions of our young people and are committed in investing our time and talent accordingly.

You Can Play a Part

As we celebrate STEM Day, consider how you can do even one small thing to pique the STEM curiosity of a young person. Guide them to resources where they can explore and thrive in STEM. You never know, you just might be influencing the next great mind of the future.
